Reader’s Question:

It just got me thinking that in case I run into some animals and damage my car, will my auto insurance company here in Kentucky cover that for me?

Layne

Louisville, KY

That’s a very interesting question, Layne, and so now you got me thinking also. A set of undomesticated dogs that apparently caused trouble on some vehicles in Australia has Americans questioning if their car insurance will provide coverage is anything akin to that happens to them. Well, according to the Insurance Information Institute or III, if you have comprehensive coverage on your car insurance policy in Kentucky, it will give you protection from contact with animals. Comprehensive insurance coverage gives protection against a lot of risks like acts of God, theft, and even damaged caused by animals.

Comprehensive insurance covers all damages not caused by collision such as fire, contact with animals, windstorm, vandalism, etc. You are not required to have comprehensive insurance coverage because this is completely discretionary. This coverage would pay up to the fair market value of your vehicle if it’s declared a total loss, minus the deductibles that you agreed to pay. However, you might need comprehensive coverage if you have a financed vehicle even though you are not legally mandated to have it.
